Kathputli, which in Hindi literally means “puppets that dance”, is the string puppet art from Rajasthan. Its origins are most probably to be found in the 8th century caste of Bhatt, the local puppeteers and musicians encharged with entertaining the maharajahs.
Traditionally, it is the women that paint the faces and provide the wardrobes. The men shape the wood and handle the puppets via a single string attached first at the extremity of the head and secondly at the waist. The incorporation of forceful whistling provides dynamism and a particular sense of happiness to performances.
Prakash Bhatt, master puppeteer of Jaipur, remains faithful to the artistic and popular traditions of kathputli, an ancestral art internationally recognised for the fascination aroused by its power and authenticity.
