Since their arrival in Europe in the 15th century, gypsy musicians have invariably adapted their style with enormous versatility to the cultures encountered on their travels.

Originating in the most distant reaches of Upper Egypt, The Musicians of the Nile have criss-crossed Europe over the last 20 years. Like the ancient bards of times long gone, the only difference is that these musicians move through space and cultures as comfortably on an airplane as on the back of a donkey.

Discovered in 1975 by Alain Weber, who has been the artistic director ever since, The Musicians of the Nile is a group that has always featured the most talented players in the traditions of Upper Egypt.

Long before the popularity of World Music, The Musicians of the Nile were the first what has been termed “Arab Music” group to attain widespread popularity and remain a unique phenomenon in Arab music. Often imitated and sometimes plagiarised, the group has kept up with the parallel currents in music since 1975. However, being a gypsy music group means constantly having to choose between acting as the guardian angel of a specific musical style or shuffling the cards dealt with the wealth of musical information gathered along the way. Often enough, these travelling musicians were the unsuspecting precursors of today’s World Music, impregnating their memory in the music of others.

Their music, the fruit of a popular and ancestral gypsy legacy, harks back to the age of the Pharaohs and remains one of the most cherished forms of expression in contemporary Egypt.
