MONSTRA (MONSTER) – LISBON FESTIVAL OF ANIMATION

With the objective of promoting the culture of the Far East and giving a Portuguese audience the opportunity to discover the best in Japanese film animation, three of the Japanese giants of this field shall be in attendance at the 2008 Monster – Lisbon Festival of Animation.

Furthermore, the festival taking place at the Museu do Oriente includes some of the most renowned works by these three emblematic Japanese filmmakers: Osamu Tezuka, Hayao Miyazaki and Koji Yamamura.

The first remains today a central figure admired by all BD artists and Japanese animators. Miyazaki is one of the greatest legends in animation and the most famous contemporary Japanese animation filmmaker.

In parallel, there are other leading landmarks in Japanese animation to be discovered with highlights such as the feature length The Tale of the White Serpent, made in 1958 by Yabushita and Kazuhiko Okabee and based on a historical Chinese popular myth. The film, also known in the west as Panda and the Magic Serpent, was not only the first full-length Japanese colour animated film but also the first to achieve international success.

Also featured on the program is a retrospective of the work of Renzo Kinoshita and a cycle dedicated to the Far East as seen from the perspective of western filmmakers. Highlights from this section include the presentation of Screen-Play (1993) by British director Barry Purves, an animated film that picked up many awards for its story that depicts different eras via a rotating table as well as films from the highly prestigious Russian series A Mountain of Gems, that features practically mythical names from Soviet Union era animated films.
