The Qawwali-Flamenco project emerged out of the meeting of two exceptional musicians: Faiz Ali Faiz and the Qawwali style of music and the interpretation of Flamenco carried out by Duquende, accompanied by the guitarist Chicuelo. This performance at the Museum of the Orient auditorium was created in 2003 under the artistic supervision of the ethno- musicologist Martina A. Catella. It has been performed to great success in various European and North African states. The power of this work essentially derives from the force of the voices and the unique musicality and creative inspiration. Sufism* and Flamenco share much in common: a musical system that comes from the same field, similar vocabularies as well as existential questions as to human beings and their Creator.
This special encounter of cultures and sounds blends these two traditions with great openness of spirit, virtuosity and creativity to the emotional pleasure of audiences.
* Sufism: a form of Islamic mysticism and asceticism, hostile to orthodox Muslim belief, is characterised by pantheist beliefs and recourse to dance and music to achieve direct communion with the divine. It spread especially through the India and Persia of the 9th to 11th centuries and has been heavily influenced by Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity.
