Students and teachers are invited to discover the Museu do Oriente collections based on the concept of “Meeting the Other”. This approach opens up insights into aspects of identity and intercultural dialogue via the concepts of voyage and collecting, themes explored by schools that have already taken up our challenge.
These activities are held on weekdays during the Museum’s normal timetable subject to prior reservation

EXOTIC CREATURES
Concepts: Habitat, Fauna, Flora
Did you know there are many plants and animals running loose around the Museum? What are they like? Will they be the same as those we are used to? Why can we find some but not others? Let’s try and discover them in this adventure… Many are well hidden… you need to search hard to hear and feel them.
A visit-game that includes a discovery kit complete with magnifying glass, rulers, pictures, plans and maps to best explore the Museum…
TREASURE CHEST
Concepts: Collection, Museum, Heritage
What is a museum? A treasure chest? A place to store objects of great worth? And a collection? How long does it take to build up? The visit begins with an empty chest and a large and diverse set of objects (including instruments, snuff boxes, replicas, images, clothes, props, etc.) words and emotions… Slowly, the chest gets filled with objects of great value to become a veritable treasure chest.
EVERY MASK TELLS A STORY
Concepts: Narratives, Story Telling, Creativity
Once upon a time… a happy and charming gentleman or perhaps… a courageous monster wanting to destroy the demons surrounding his people! Come and help us tell the stories hidden behind the masks or invent totally new ones. This visit–game is based on the collection of masks which, with a touch of magic, emerge out from their display cases.

AROMAS OF THE ORIENT
Concepts: Flavours, Colours, Senses
Museums can be a box of sensory experiences. Can we discover a piece of work through our senses beyond vision and touch? This visit opens up another understanding of both our own senses and works in the collection through the medium of cinnamon, saffron and curry.
During its course, children encounter various references to spices and learn about their respective histories before moving onto the Education Service «kitchen» to produce their own spice paints and give free reign to their imagination.
I MASK MYSELF, YOU MASK YOURSELF, WE ALL MASK OURSELVES!
Concepts: Identity, Masks, Theatre
I can suddenly become another person. As if in fairytale, I wave a wand and… WHOOSH! I am a god, a dragon, witch or clown. Just who am I after all? An artistic workshop featuring plaster of Paris mask making and painting inspired on examples found in the collection. The event culminates with a short performance recreating the episode dealt with during the visit.

ROUTES OF THE ORIENT
Concepts: Discoveries, Culture, Asian History
Guided tour adapted to the respective academic level. To better understand a culture, it is necessary to approach it from a range of differing perspectives. Hence, we dip into Anthropology, Sociology and the History of Art to open up various different cultures and their relationships with the Portuguese Era of Discovery. In accordance with the educational objectives defined by the teacher, the visit may be structured around:
• the Portuguese Presence in Asia exhibition,
• the Gods of Asia exhibition,
• both exhibitions.
THE UNIVERSE OF MASKS
Concepts: Narrative, Masks, History
Guided Tour: Masks of Asia
Guided tours adapted to the respective academic level during which the various different types of masks are focused on in addition to their origins, uses, meanings and construction methods.

FROM WAREHOUSE TO MUSEUM

Target Audience: Primary and Secondary School Students
Guided tours adapted to the respective academic level with the purpose of analysing the different phases and uses of the building now housing the Museu do Oriente. This initiative seeks to raise awareness about architectonic heritage and an understanding of the urban surroundings, placing the building and its refurbishment within a historical context.

GLÓRIA OF THE ORIENT

Target Audience: Primary School Students
Answer by answer, we progress or fall back steps in the Glória Game. The luck factor comes into play determining the route taken on which students acquire learning about Asia…
TRAVELLING THROUGH THE WORD
Concept: Game, Travel Writing, History
Target Audience: Secondary School Students
Travelling does not always have to be by plane, boat or train. How often are we able to travel without ever leaving? Based on such a perspective, this visit-game unfolds based on a series of literary excerpts on different eras and places. Students, organised into small groups, have to associate the written text with a particular section of the exhibition before then explaining it to their colleagues. At the end, in the workshop, there is a look at the art of language on landscapes, smells and flavour traced in words.

ASIA IN CARTOON FORM

Target Audience: Primary School
Many are the characters that await us in the Orient and many with different physical features and personalities. Some magic, others heroic while still others great adventurers. Learning about each becomes an important mission. We set out to meet them and then turn them into cartoon form.
TELL ME HOW YOU MASK YOURSELF AND I’LL TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE

Target Audience: Secondary School
What can masks tell us about the peoples that have made and used them? After visiting this temporary exhibition, students set off to the workshop where, organised into groups, they sort masks out geographically and discover their differing stylistic features, functions and their various different meanings.
MY INNER MAP
Concepts: Cartography, Discoveries, Travel Writing
Target Audience: Primary and Secondary Schools
After perusing the various maps on display, each student sets about creating his own world map in which places correspond to the geography of emotions and memories. Virtual reality making the planet on which we live personal. Will we be able to create our own virtual map?

This visit provides an oversight on the different cultures on display, their relationship with European history and their evolution over the course of time. Specific focuses include the main festivities, the role of artistic creativity and their respective symbolical, social and anthropological meanings.
THE UNIVERSE OF MASKS
Concepts: Narrative, Masks, History
Voyage through the universe of the masks of Asia, establishing the differences and classifying them according to their respective types, origins, uses and means of construction.
FROM WAREHOUSE TO MUSEUM
Concepts: Heritage, Space, History, City, Museum
Visit the various different parts of the building that define the architectural conversion project. This tour is complemented by a multimedia presentation on the building, an architectonic symbol of the Salazar regime and port architecture of the 1940s and on the importance of architecture to contemporary museology.
