LIU FANG – pipa e guzheng world music
Liu Fang is above all renowned for her expressive and emotionally charged interpretation of traditional music for the pipa – the traditional four stringed Chinese guitar and the guzheng – the Chinese cithara, within both the classical and folk traditions.
The “Empress of the pipa”, as she is known, is able to convey in a meaningful and erudite fashion the beauty and depth of this ancestral music form in addition to the subtle sounds of these instruments through the power and sensitivity with which she plays.
Liu Fang has generated an impressive artistic profile able to captivate both audiences and critics around the world with the depth and grace of her performances in addition to the sheer breadth of her repertoire. She is a paradigm for the meeting between East and West and traditions of millennia and the currents of modernity.
Liu Fang has won a range of awards including the prestigious Future Generations Millennium Prize, in June 2001, in Canada. As the jury declared: “Liu Fang's mastery of the pipa and the guzheng has established her international reputation as a highly talented young interpreter of traditional Chinese music. She aspires to combine her knowledge and practice of Eastern traditions with Western classical music, contemporary music and improvisation, thereby creating new musical forms, uniting different cultures and discovering new audiences”.
She studied under the guidance of Zheng Qinrong at the Kumning School of Art before continuing her studies at the Shanghai Conservatory. In a short period of time, she became a leading soloist and was invited to lecture at the Kumning School of Chinese Orchestra Music.
In 1996, Liu Fang moved to Canada where she continues to reside when not engaged in her international touring commitments. Her first globally distributed CD was released last year.
