DRAGON-BOAT REGATTA

The Museu do Oriente is the promoter of the Fundação Oriente Cup for dragon-boats to be held at Doca da Rocha de Conde d’Óbidos, Lisbon.
The dragon-boat has three sections. Ahead, with his back against the dragon head, stands the drum athlete. His drum beating controls the rhythm of the rowers and gives instructions on the performance of the other boats. The control of the boat route is made by the athlete at the rudder. The rowers sit in the middle of the boat.
These regattas are very popular not only in China. Throughout Asia and also in other continents, to where they were taken by Asian emigrants, we find these regattas.

The event will be preceeded by a demonstration of the dragon-dance performed by the She Si Martial Arts School, from Oporto.
