There are artists and Artists. The difference goes beyond the graphic. The difference is how, above and beyond all possible doubt, they achieve that which leaves the audience feeling that they have given their body and soul in expressing their inner self. They leave us, the mere audience or onlookers, with that feeling that we are witnessing/hearing a special moment. The Moment!
In this restricted group of artists, we find Lula Pena. It took just a single record, Phados, for the world (and yes that is not some convenient generalisation but the actual reality for this artist) to fall prostrate at his feet. Lula Pena is the personification of the new fado: capable of renovating traditional fado into something purer, more refined and simple.
After a long run of travels (in search, in research) and many others promoting Phados, Lula Pena encountered other means of keeping us waiting in expectation of a new release of originals. In the meantime, he has dedicated his time to other artistic disciplines such as performances (including the renowned series following the launch of Phados during which he displayed an electrocardiogram reading of his heartbeat while singing), collaborations with musicians from other cultures (such as Jan de Haas and Osama Abdulrasol) and a range of installations (compositions based on samples and sounds collected throughout months and designed to be listened to while in contemplation such as during a visit to the Planetarium).
Now, and just as the horizon seemed to empty, Lula Pena is gearing up to surprise us with his latest recordings, due to be released during the course of 2008 and with this stage performance.
