SANGAM: CHARLES LLOYD WITH ZAKIR HUSSEIN AND ERIC HARLAND (USA/India)
Charles Lloyd (saxophone, flute, piano), Zakir Hussain (tablas), Eric Harland (drums)
The American improviser Charles Lloyd, currently aged 70, reunited the Sangam trio in 2004 to pay homage to the recently deceased great drummer, Billy Higgins, his longstanding companion on many leading projects, including the recording of the double CD Which way is East. Given that this is in honour of a drummer Lloyd opted to ensure percussion was very much to the fore in the trio. Hence, he joined up with the Indian tablas virtuoso Zakir Hussain and the drummer Eric Harland (who also plays piano). It should also be mentioned that Charles Lloyd performs across the tenor (his leading instrument) and alto saxophones, tarogato, alto and bass flutes, piano and percussion.
