An introduction to what is termed “Chinese culture” and issues, theoretical as well as methodological, raised by its study, particularly those deriving from approaches made from a “Western” perspective.
The diversity of the themes studied provides participants with a panoramic vision over Chinese culture(s) as process(es) in permanent mutation over the course of both time (ancient China, classical China, modern China) and space (Chinese society, Taiwanese society and Diasporas, specifically in Portugal).
The introductory nature of this course ensures it is accessible to those without any prior contact with Chinese languages or culture. At the same time, its methodology is based on a schematic topic based approach incorporating both the history and cultural assumptions of Sinology (and/or Chinese studies as studies on this field) thereby opening up a space for reflection and debate for those either having already studied or seeking to study these matters.
