Among the alarmists announcing the end of the Western world in the face of the “great Asian century” and the sceptics overlooking the impact of the transformations in the East, there is the need for an informed and sober look at the real challenges and opportunities that Asia poses for Portuguese and European interests.

In the format of four monthly seminars, the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (Nova University of Lisbon) brings together a range of researchers to present and debate their specialist work on various strategic and regional dimensions to contemporary Asia, with a particular focus on China and India.

Open to public and private decision makers, journalists, students and other interested parties, these seminars aim to promote debate and broaden understanding about a region that is fundamental for future global political and economic stability.

Thematic areas Asia/China/India:

 1. Regional security in Asia and global stability

 2. Politics and internal security: systems and domestic processes

 3. Foreign policies, international economic relationships and energy resources

 4. Portugal/European Union – Asia relations.

Organisation: Portuguese Institute of International Relations, Nova University of Lisbon (IPRI-UNL), with the support of Fundação Oriente/Museu do Oriente.
