PAULO SOUSA - sitar
PAULO SOUSA (sitar), RAIMUND ENGELHARDT (tablas)
The sitar player Paulo Sousa was born in Lisbon in 1964 and throughout his musical career has maintained an eclectic approach influenced by the very best he has found in the styles of music played in the many different places he has visited.
In the 1980s, he began playing electric guitar and joined Essa Entente, which recorded a series of albums. Musically, he began his academic studies at the beginning of the 1990s at the Setúbal Regional Conservatory where he graduated in classical guitar. He has also attended the Barreiro Jazz School. In this same period, he took up an interest in the sitar that resulted in his 2000 tour of the North of India.
He founded the group Alap and, in June 2005, launched his first recordings on the sitar in conjunction with João Moreira on the tablas and Paulo Cavaco on synthesisers.
In 2006, he made two visits to London to take classes in the sarangi and sitar with the Indian musician Baluji Shrivastav. In October of that year, he set off to India, this time to Puna, in the state of Maharastra, having been awarded a Fundação Oriente study grant. There, through to August 2007, he furthered his knowledge of Hindustani music and advanced his performance and technique on the sitar. He had classes both with Pandit Hindraj Divekar, sitar master and player with Rudravina, and with Swanand Arole, the sitar disciple of Ustad Rais Khan, the oldest master representing the Gharana de Mewaat.
In October 2008, he gave a concert at the Belém Cultural Centre with the Indian tablista Makarand Tulankar, broadcast live by Antena 2 and later released on CD.
