OS Violinhos – Shinichi Suzuki THE PEDAGOGY oF LOVE
Made up of around 40 violinists, carefully selected from the over 150 violin students attending the Lisbon Academy of Music, the Os Violinhos orchestra, directed by Filipa Poejo, has already taken its magic to some of the largest venues in the country.
Os Violinhos generally take on different formats with variations in both the size of the ensemble and the age range carrying out didactic concerts and musical animations, especially dedicated to younger enthusiasts.
In June 2002, The Magical Strings of Youth, one of the best of its peer institutions worldwide, toured Portugal at the invitation of Os Violinhos, with the highlight being a concert in the Camões Theatre featuring both orchestras.
The orchestra is a regular at the Festival of Music, the Spring Festival and on Music Days staged at the Belém Cultural Centre. In its Grand Auditorium, there is the annual sell out performance featuring renowned musical directors such as Aníbal Lima, António Rosado, Daniel Rowland, Gerardo Ribeiro, Irene Lima, Lusotango, Paulo Gaio Lima, Pedro Carneiro, Pedro Ribeiro and the maestro António Victorino d'Almeida.
At the international level, Os Violinhos have made various tours of Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Sweden and the United States with landmark concerts in Arezzo, Assis, Chicago (in the Orchestra Hall, home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Copenhagen, Florence, Oslo, Prague, Salzburg, Stockholm and Vienna.
The working ethic, based on demanding levels and discipline, fosters merit while simultaneously encouraging great proximity between teacher/student and comradeship between peers. This is a methodology that not only enables talents to be discovered but also rapidly ensures their abilities bear fruit. Hence the record achieved by young orchestra violinists in gaining places at the Lisbon Higher School of Music and winning the main national violin competitions (Young Music Award - RDP, Competition A. Capela, Competition Tomás Borba, City of Fundão International Violin Competition, Bow Instrument Competition of Alto Minho, José Alegria Award - Évora). Orchestra members have already notched up over 30 awards of which 12 were first prizes.
