José Caldas – DIRECTOR
PRODUCED BY: Companhia de Ópera do Castelo
Playing with the enormous expressive capacity of the lyrical voice and all of the “almost infinite” possibilities through which voice may explore sound, with a vertiginous palette of interaction, attacks and vocal games, this recital, directed by José Caldas, seeks to amaze children with lyrical and erudite song tracing their development from their origins through to contemporary forms, revealing the influences and connections with popular song, with jazz and other approaches beyond the scope of Western traditions.
Familiar songs, with their recognisable melodies from musical boxes, from composers “as serious” as Schubert or Brahms, others with illuminating, funny and unexpected stories are here presented in a surreal sequence inspired by the infinite power that we, when children, have to imagine fantastic worlds in which everything is possible.
From Schubert (the father of the German lied) to the great masters of French mélodie such as Fauré and Poulenc, passing by the music of Gershwin and the experimental languages of Berio, this performance is an initiation into the rich sonorous and dramatic universe of the song, made from a thousand colours, a thousand subtleties and a thousand histories from the complicity between voice with piano.
