INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: PORTUGAL, EUROPE AND ASIA IN THE 21st CENTURY
Arrábida Meetings 2009
Auditorium, 10.00-18.00
Price: € 40.00
Target audience: General public
Given what history has to teach us, to what extent can you theorise and forecast the unfolding of the expected transition to a bi or multi polar world, including China?
What is the role of the European Union in this new architecture for global security that hangs on a trans-Pacific axis and thus threatens to bypass the “old continent”?
What are the new priorities and external policies of China and India, in particular regarding what is referred to as the “Global South” and the United States and Europe?
Does “Asia” remain the mere agglomeration of regions with independent dynamics or does it make sense to take a more holistic approach and consider it a new continental security complex?
These are the four main questions that guest international and Portuguese specialists shall be answering in this international conference held under the auspices of a research project run by the IPRI-UNL – Portuguese Institute of International Relations, Nova University of Lisbon, with support from Fundação Oriente.
Following the cycle of research seminars held between January and April, this initiative provides the chance for an in-depth look at the “new Asia” within the international context as well as considering the best ways to interpret these new dynamics and their implications for Portuguese and European interests.
