THE HANDOVER CEREMONIES

THE HANDOVER CEREMONIES

Practically five years on from the 25 April revolution, in February 1979, Portugal and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations. Henceforth, the two parties pre-empted the timetable to hold bilateral talks on the status of Macau, a territory under Portuguese administration. The negotiations were formally launched in June 1986. In the following year came the Joint Luso-Chinese Declaration on the Future of Macau defining the terms for the founding of the Special Administrative Region of Macau with the corresponding handover of powers taking place on 20 December 1999.
